He attended public school in Plainfield, New Jersey and graduated Scotch Plains Senior High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, and continued his education at Virginia State University.

Mr. Foster was an active member of Cathedral International Church in both Perth Amboy and Plainfield, New Jersey locations. He was a vibrant participant with the Men's Ministries, Sunday School and Missionaries. James was a devoted volunteer to all organizations that needed help. He served in soup kitchen, and food and & coat drives just to name a few. He participated in numerous walks for various causes including Autism and Breast Cancer.

"Coach James" as he was also affectionately known, coached football, basketball, and baseball at the City of Plainfield Recreation Center for close to 25 years.

"Casper", as his brethren know, him as spirited & proud member of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Inc. first as a member of New Jersey Grad, and later, a member of the Central Jersey Grad chapter of G Phi G. He was known within the organization of Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship Inc.- for his humble participation in community service activities, but even more famous for his food service skills. Outside of the other local activities he performed over time, he was known as one of cornerstones for his organization's annual 4th of July, New Jersey cookout.

As a result of his generous spirit, pleasant disposition, and energetic personality, he was loved by all that he met. Many people refer to him as a gentle soul. Quick to gibe of himself and never asked for accolades and acknowledgement, "I don't need all that, I'm just doing what needs to be done." His influence and contributions will forever be remembered. He was a man who walked in confidence and strength that created pathways for others.
